Author Interview with Kytka Hilmar-Jezek: Book Power: A Platform for Writing, Branding, Positioning & Publishing

Why did you feel you had to tell this story?
I meet amazing people every day who tell me they would like to write a book, but it is always “someday”. When I ask them “why not now” everyone says they are not a writer, they do not have the time, and all sorts of other excuses. I felt compelled to write this book to get rid of the myths and misconceptions surrounding writing. I empower people to write their books quickly and to self publish so they may benefit from the credibility and leverage a book provides. A book is the best marketing tool there is, no matter what business you are in.Where do you get your ideas?
I am a speaker and trainer and much of my earlier seminars and workshops were on building a platform and a brand to elevate your business. I decided to bring Book Power into it because I realized that when my clients would do some of the exercises for creating a framework of their business or services and compile it into a flow chart or mindmap, they really had a complete outline for their book. Filling in the rest of it was easy, especially when they understood the power that authoring a book delivers.

Do you ever experience writer’s block and how do you overcome it?
Never. I teach people that writer’s block is really just creativity having to slow down. When we imagine the traditional image of the author hunched over the typewriter staring at a blank page, we get intimidated. We have been sold this artificial image by traditional book publishers who wanted to control who gets into the game. The reality is that we now live in an age of technology that makes writing super simple. We have dictation software, recording devices and inexpensive transcription services. When people know how to use technology to “write” they can just allow the content to flow and capture it in its purest form. Later they can rearrange the structure and edit.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers on the writing and publishing process?
Capture all of your thoughts as they come. Get a small mp3 recorder and when you feel it coming at lightning speed, do not pretend that you will be able to recreate it later. Turn on your recording devices and capture it now. Later you can get the recordings transcribed and edited. The important thing is to capture that pure content as it comes and when moments of clarity and creativity come around. That is the best work that our authors put out, because it is what comes from within them and it is authentic. I also advise to self publish so that you have full control of your finished books. Several years ago I would have advised against this, but times are changing and with the technology available today, I would not recommend a traditional publisher to slow down your creative genius.

How do you market your work? Have you found some avenues to be more successful than others?
Book Power is what I do, so I talk about it everywhere and to everyone I come in contact with. I teach about using your book as a business card, so that is what I do. Once you drop a book into the business card basket, you get an entirely different response from people and suddenly you are the expert, the guru and the star in the room. If you are proud of your work, you should share it everywhere. Call radio stations and offer an author interview, guest post on blogs, take interviews. As a self published author, you really should understand a well build platform and use it to your benefit. I discuss all of these things in Book Power and I make it very simple to understand.

If your book was made into a movie, who do you picture playing each part?
Book Power, if made into a movie – would be a story of inspiration and empowerment. Loads of trucks filled with Book Power would be delivered to schools, youth groups, shelters and organizations that help people to get back on their feet. They would get a copy in their hands and feel the need to share their stories. We would begin to see the human story coming to print where everyone shares their gifts and messages. As a collective, our voices and experiences would forge new paths and make the journey of life more positive for those following on similar paths. Each character would be a hero and they would all receive an Oscar for best performance this time around!
